Big Bang North West: Big Bang @ Wade Deacon & Ormiston Chadwick Academy

On the 8th of December, the Big Bang North West facilitated a Big Bang double bill at Wade Deacon High School & Ormiston Chadwick Academy in partnership with Shaping Futures

Farm Urban’s Dr Paul Myers, delivered an adaption specifically for schools of his TEDx talk on fixing the broken food system and health.

Paul gave students an insight into his journey to becoming a scientist, talking about the interests, inspirations and challenges that took him from Liverpool high school student to founder of an award-winning social enterprise.

He shared the skills he picked up along the way, from his time spent in remote parts of Central America doing environmental and community conservation work, studying for an undergraduate degree in Human Biology and a PhD in Epigenetics at the University of Liverpool, to time spent as a research scientist for the U.S government.

There was also the opportunity to build Farm Urban Produce Pods.

“The produce pod is an open source aquaponics system that allows you to grow fresh, healthy food all year round. Aquaponics is a mini-ecosystem inspired by nature: your fish fertilise your plants and your plants purify the water for your fish!”

Students also heard from Shaping Futures about STEM in Higher Education and student life.

Over the coming year the Big Bang North West will be bringing you a series of free to attend ‘Big Bang @’ events. These half day sessions consist of hands-on workshops, science shows & a careers market place, all taking place at a variety of venues across the region.

Big Bang @ School

The Big Bang @ School supports schools to deliver an event to excite pupils about STEM subjects and inspire them to consider science or engineering careers.

A Big Bang @ School Fair can be big or small, you can invite local businesses to take part, involve STEM ambassadors, bring in activity providers or do it all by yourself. The important thing is that pupils have fun finding out where their STEM studies can lead them.

The Big Bang @ School is part of the wider Big Bang programme, led by EngineeringUK in partnership with over 200 organisations.

You can find out more here or if you live in the North West contact [email protected] or call 0151 9094812 to express your interest.

Shaping Futures, (also known as the Merseyside Collaborative Outreach Programme) is a new outreach programme for the Liverpool City Region formed by 12 local Higher Education (HE) providers and led by the University of Liverpool.
