Big Bang North West: Big Bang @ Furness College
On October 17th and 18th, Furness College hosted the Big Bang @ Furness facilitated by C-STEM Ltd and the Barrow Engineering Project. A two day celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths to help young people explore their future career options.
The event welcomed over a thousand primary, secondary and further education students to Furness College’s Channelside campus. Attendees enjoyed a series of exciting activities and interactive experiments ranging from edible insects to virtual reality.
The college provided sensational science shows throughout the day along with ‘how to be a superhero’ demonstrations that centred on strength and X-ray vision – the science of superpowers!
Furness College staff demonstrated a virtual welder as part of their Learning Zone.
Visitors enjoyed experiments & gaming experiences with C-STEM and exhibitor stands covering wildlife, chemistry, the human body, healthcare, energy and more.
Corio Raptor Care & Rehabilitation offered everyone the chance to meet their beautiful birds…
…and the University of Cumbria had locusts and crickets to eat (even our Tim had one!).
Representatives from businesses and STEM ambassadors from across Furness and South Cumbria discussed their work and demonstrated technologies they use.
Siemens displayed a selection of amazing Gold CREST Award projects alongside their activities.
Tony Gill, of C-STEM, said: “The Big Bang Fair has become a key STEM event in the calendar and people in education and business look forward to this each year. It’s great to be able to hold the event at Furness College, which has amazing facilities and a great reputation for training in STEM subjects. This is part of a programme of STEM activities in Furness designed to enthuse and excite young people about the potential of STEM careers in the future.”
Principal and Chief Executive of Furness College Andrew Wren said the event is a great opportunity to bring together talented students and their potential future employers. “We always look forward to hosting this fun event and meeting the next generation of engineers. I particularly enjoy meeting such enthusiastic young people who are exploring their future career options. As a college with the biggest range of courses in the area, we offer both academic and vocational routes into this fast-paced sector.”
Alongside the College, organisations including BAE Systems, Siemens, FACE, Gen 2, Lancaster University, University of Cumbria, LA12, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Electricity North West, Oxley Group, Wax Lyrical, GSK, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Trust and Kimberly-Clark supported the event along with the Big Bang North West.
