Big Bang North West: Big Bang @ Penketh High School Competition!
On the 22nd of March, Penketh High School will be hosting an exciting Big Bang @ School event & project competition!
Groups of learners at Penketh have been researching ‘How has the moon landings 50 years ago helped to shape the technology we use?’ and preparing projects linked to this question.
Students have looked at the developments in space exploration and what we now know about the universe. Others researched technologies that had to be developed for the original moon landing. Some have even looked at newer NASA technologies, linked with space exploration that have made it to the public domain.
Penketh High School’s STEM Coordinator, Mr Fone, launched the competition with an interactive whole school assembly & presentation on the question.
On Friday, competing learners will present their ideas, research & projects in an exhibition style environment for a judging panel (including the school principle, and experts from The IOP). Penketh has also invited Year 6 pupils from a local primary school to tour the project exhibition and learn about space and technology by communicating with older learners.
The school has worked closely with attending primary students in the lead up to the event by delivering hands-on activities & providing fun, interesting resources.
Team Big Bang North West cannot wait for Friday’s event. We’re excited to see the results of these STEMsational sessions & all of the innovative student projects. Hopefully we’ll be seeing many of them at The Big Bang North West in the Big Bang UK Competition!

The Big Bang @ School
The Big Bang @ School supports schools to deliver an event to excite pupils about STEM subjects and inspire them to consider science or engineering careers.
A Big Bang @ School Fair can be big or small, you can invite local businesses to take part, involve STEM ambassadors, bring in activity providers or do it all by yourself. The important thing is that pupils have fun finding out where their STEM studies can lead them.
The Big Bang @ School is part of the wider Big Bang programme, led by EngineeringUK in partnership with over 200 organisations.
