Reading is STEMsational Programme: The Launch!

On the 14th and 15th of January, All About STEM in partnership with Reading Rocks, launched the Reading is STEMsational programme. These two events (covering Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester) were packed with primary teachers, STEM Ambassadors and other partners looking to get involved in this inspirational cross curricular scheme.

Reading is STEMsational is a literacy project which supports primary teachers to deliver a school STEM week. The programme has recently been piloted in three primary schools in the North West and has now been offered to regional primary schools attending the open launch.

“We have curated sets of fiction and non-fiction texts, focused on particular STEM themes, which primary schools can loan from All About STEM, free-of-charge. Teachers use the texts as the basis for their STEM Week literacy and Science lessons and as a spring-board for the rest of their weekly planning. Assemblies, other subject lessons and extra-curricular activities for the week all focus on the STEM theme explored in the texts.”

Each themed book set references the relevant Science national curriculum content for year groups 1-6 and includes:

  • A whole school text (one copy for each year group) to provide a focus for the topic
  • A class set of a ‘driver’ text for each year group
  • Several smaller sets of ‘satellite’ texts that can be used for guided reading in small groups
  • Additional texts, relating to the topic, that the teacher can use as they see fit

Every themed text has been specially selected to engage young learners & all are beautifully illustrated.

“In addition to using the texts, the school’s STEM Week can be enriched through visits from other organisations (including STEM Ambassadors) and activities planned to engage with parents, in order to develop pupils’ careers awareness and to encourage pupils’ involvement in STEM activity outside of school.”

“All pupils must be encouraged to read widely to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world they live in, to establish an appreciation and love of reading to gain knowledge across the curriculum.”

“We are overjoyed with the response to the programme & we’re so excited to see each of our schools STEM Week successes!”
