Nuffield Research Placements: Learners Mentored by Staff & PhD students

University professionals can host Nuffield Research Placements but did you know that they’re not just for staff? PhD students are fantastic role models for learners too!

Dr Rob Lindsay from the University of Manchester signed-up to host a number of Year 12 placements with his PhD students as mentors. “The PhD students enhance a number of skills through this activity, including supervision, mentoring, project management, time management, problem solving, and the capacity to explain science/engineering topics at a suitable level.

For many of them, it is the first time that they take full responsibility for a distinct project, which needs to have a beginning/middle/end for the school student.  Moreover, given the relatively short time that the Nuffield student is engaged on the project, they need to ensure that progress will likely be achieved on this timescale.” – Dr Rob Lindsay, Associate Director of M4DE Centre for Doctoral Training
