Academic Institutions: Host a Nuffield Research Placement

Academic Institutions can inspire young people to gain STEM skills by hosting a Nuffield Research Placement!

Nuffield Research Placements (NRPs) are engaging, real-life research or development projects, where talented year 12 (or equivalent) students are placed at the heart of a UK host organisation. They are a fantastic opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned at school while providing a meaningful contribution to the work of researchers and industry professionals.

Edge Hill University is a shining example of a host institution. Previously they have shared numerous good news stories about the programme and the difference it can make. Your institution can get involved too!

Edge Hill: “Dr Claire Jones had the privilege of supervising Lydia Harrisson, a Year 12 A-level student from Runshaw College who successfully applied for a Nuffield Research Placement (NRP).

Lydia worked on the woodland composition and forest dynamics of a local woodland, Mill Wood, Liverpool.  She spent a number of days working within our industry-standard labs using microscopes to identify pollen grains that allow us to reconstruct the vegetation composition of the woodland through time.  Alongside this record, she also used charcoal-based fire reconstruction and woodland history information, to inform her interpretation of the changes in the woodland over time.”

Following her placement Lydia went on to take gold at the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad in 2020!

Are you an inspirational institution?
Can you offer a bright, capable young student a real-life experience?
(Virtual placements are also an option.)
