Academic Institutions: Host a Nuffield Research Placement
Academic Institutions can inspire young people to gain STEM skills by hosting a Nuffield Research Placement!
Nuffield Research Placements (NRPs) are engaging, real-life research or development projects, where talented year 12 (or equivalent) students are placed at the heart of a UK host organisation. They are a fantastic opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned at school while providing a meaningful contribution to the work of researchers and industry professionals.
The success stories are endless but we’d like to share a few…
“I was really pleased when I found out I had been accepted onto the Nuffield Research Scheme, especially when I discovered that there were only 66 places in total. After completing the programme I feel confident going into my final year of A levels knowing I have successfully completed a research project.”
• Dr Rob Lindsay from the University of Manchester signed-up to host a number of Year 12 placements with his PhD students as mentors. “The PhD students enhance a number of skills through this activity, including supervision, mentoring, project management, time management, problem solving, and the capacity to explain science/engineering topics at a suitable level.
• Hugh Baird College A-level students successfully completed Nuffield Research Placements and received Gold Crest Awards. Learners attended their placements during the summer, which were held remotely due to COVID-19 restrictions.
