How to Host a Research Placement or Experience

Are you an employer or an academic institution?
You can nurture future talent by hosting a Research Placement or Experience!

Year 12 placement and experience students are bright, capable, and can complete a variety of tasks including data analysis, scoping, and experimental design.

Take a look at this quick Q&A to see how you can get involved:

What is a Research Placement/Experience?

Research Placements and Experiences give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to gain skills and confidence in science and research. They are funded by the Nuffield Foundation and delivered by STEM Learning to improve social well-being and educational opportunity across the UK.

How long would a placement be?

There are two options:

Experience Placement: 5 Days

Placement providers will need to be ready to provide an opportunity to explore, investigate and experience the skills & knowledge needed to be successful in their sector, encouraging and supporting a reflective learning process.

Research Placement: 2 Weeks

Placement providers will need to be ready with a research topic/question related to their field and offer supervision that bridges the gap between school/college and Higher Education or employment.

Which projects work well?

A well-supervised but independent research project suitable for a 16/17 year-old. Projects must have broadly scientific, quantitative or technical content, but they don’t have to be based in a laboratory. They might be office-based or include a lot of fieldwork, or they might focus on engineering, data analysis or computer science.

How do I offer a placement?

Placements and Experiences are administered by a network of regional coordinators across the UK.
Your coordinator will select students who are suitable for your project and will support them throughout the process. The first step is to have a conversation with your regional coordinator, who will tell you all you need to know about hosting a student.

What are the benefits?

By hosting a placement you can support young people and diversify your workforce while forging strong links with schools and colleges in your local area.

Participations means:

• Supporting and inspiring the next generation and future STEM workforce.
• Receiving invaluable assistance and fresh insights into current working practices.
• Key opportunities for professional development of staff.
• Fulfilling public engagement, widening participation & CSR goals.
• Enhancing institutional reputation by working with motivated students.
