Neston High School take part in UK engineering challenge!

On the 17th of October, Neston High School participated in an IET Faraday® Challenge Day delivered by All About STEM.

Students became real-life engineers for a day when they researched, designed and built solutions to real engineering problems as part of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s IET Faraday® Challenge Day.

IET Faraday® Challenge Days are run by regional delivery partners across the UK with up to six teams of local school students competing at each event to find the best solution to an engineering-related challenge.

This year’s challenge is in association with UKRI’s Faraday Battery Challenge, but the brief for these young engineers is hidden in secrecy to avoid unfair preparation and research. Teams must race against the clock to solve a real-life engineering problem, putting their engineering and technology knowledge and skills to the test.

Congratulations to Neston High School’s winning team!
Who will top the league table and make the national final?
All About STEM has more IET Faraday® Challenge Days to come.

Demi Cornell, IET Faraday® Education Manager, said “I’m thrilled for all the students participating in the IET Faraday® Challenge Days to experience what it’s like to be young engineers for a day! They’ll have the chance to tackle a real-world challenge connected to the Faraday Battery Challenge through interactive, hands-on learning.”

“There is a huge demand for new engineers and technicians, and we are confident that this will challenge young people’s perceptions of engineering and inspire the next generation by giving them an insight into the life of a real engineer and show them just how exciting and creative engineering really is.” The events aim to encourage more young people to study and consider exciting and rewarding careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) by using creativity, innovation and problem solving skills.

The winning team from each event will win a place on the season’s league table. The top teams from across the UK will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the national final in June 2025 to compete for a cash prize of up to £1,000 for their school.

The IET Faraday® Challenge Days are part of a wider Education programme, made up of a whole host of teaching resources and activities to inspire and attract the engineers of tomorrow.

Neston High School – Student Feedback:

“During the IET Faraday Challenge, I enjoyed the independence of the task and how we were able to express our ideas to our teammates/friends the most. I learned how to incorporate my ideas into my prototype and how to work as a team. My highlights were that I was exploring my job options through engineering in a fun way. However, I did face some challenges like trying to come up with the idea, managing the amount of money spent and how to assemble the idea into a prototype. Overall, I had a great time and thank you for letting me be a part of it.”

“Thank you for inviting me to the IET Faraday Challenge, the thing I enjoyed the most was getting to build a working powered prototype. The budget restrictions really helped make everyone think about the design, even though we had over 40 faradays left. It was a day that I won’t forget.”

“Personally, I thought that the IET Faraday Challenge Day was good for learning new skills and knowledge about DT. This competition has showed us how you can use more than one element for a project. I thought it was really fun and would do it again.”

All About STEM is making it happen across the North West. We work on lots of different projects to bring exciting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to schools across the region, linking them with business and industry expert volunteers inspiring the next generation of STEM specialists.
