more Info

It’s just not possible for our All About STEM team to visit every FE college or Sixth Form in the North West region to encourage eligible Y12 students to apply for a Nuffield Research Placement but we want all students from all institutions to be able to access information and guidance about what the programme entails and how to apply. We’ve therefore made a recording of our Student Introductory Presentation and our Student Application Presentation so teachers can show them to their classes, post them on their Y12 school VLE or share them direct with specific students.

In order to help us understand which schools are promoting Nuffield Research Placements, and which ones we may need to promote the programme to, you’ll just need to provide your school details on a Crowd Signal survey and you’ll then be redirected to a private YouTube channel from where you can play the presentations directly or copy the URLs to share with students or on your school VLE. The channel is not password protected, it’s just not publicly searchable on YouTube.

The official deadline for applications in the North West region is 28th February 2022. However, several teachers have contacted us to say that the February half-term break was causing challenges for students in completing their applications/sourcing references.

We have therefore made the decision to extend the application window to 31st March 2022.

Student Introductory Presentation

The Student Introductory Presentation gives an overview of the Nuffield Research Programme exploring questions such as:

  • What is a Nuffield Research Placement?
  • Is the programme for me?
  • Am I eligible to apply?
  • What are the benefits of taking part?
  • What might I do as a project and whom might I be working with?
  • What is the programme schedule?
  • How do I apply?
  • What additional benefits could I gain?

The presentation is perfect for introducing students (and staff!) to the programme and helping them to get a sense of what’s on offer and why getting involved in the programme could be a really brilliant opportunity. It is suitable for use in a relevant A level subject lesson (Sciences, Maths, Engineering, Technology, Computing, Geography, Economics, Social Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Statistics and Data Science etc) or within an assembly, enrichment or Careers Education context. It lasts just under 20 minutes.

It’s important that students understand the drivers behind the programme before they apply. The Nuffield Research Placement programme is specifically a widening participation programme, open only to students who meet the eligibility criteria. It is focused on providing research-related industry or academic experiences. Students will have the opportunity to work on a collaborative research project which contributes to the wider work of their host organisation.

There is a Student Introductory Presentation Worksheet available in the Downloads section below which just asks some questions about the content of the presentation and can help students to focus on extracting important information as they are watching.

We have also provided, in the Downloads section below, a document providing a basic framework for supporting students in writing their Personal Statement, which is required as part of the application process. We make good use of the Personal Statements to help us match students to projects so it is important that they provide relevant information about their interests.

If, following viewing of the presentation, teachers or students need any further support, they can pick up with our team at [email protected].

Access the Student Introductory Presentation (N.B. Presentation will reference the original application deadline date of 28th Feb 22. This has been extended to 31st March 22).

Student Application Presentation

After watching the Student Introductory Presentation, students who are eligible, and keen, to apply to be part of the programme should also view the Student Application Presentation. This will assist them with the online application process. Again, any questions or problems should be directed to [email protected]

The deadline date for applications is now 31st March 2022 but applications can be completed well in advance of this date. This will assist our team in trying to recruit projects matching students’ geographical location and areas of interest.

Access the Student Application Presentation (N.B. Presentation will reference the original application deadline date of 28th Feb 22. This has been extended to 31st March 22).
