All About STEM AMBASSADOR
We love nothing more than to spotlight our inspirational STEM stars and there are many.
Meet Junior Chemist, Sophie Gray!
“I’m Sophie, a junior chemist working for Veolia, the UK leading resource management company, at its hazardous waste facility in Ellesmere Port. Veolia provides a range of waste, water and energy management services designed to build the circular economy and preserve scarce raw materials. At our Ellesmere Port facility we manage hazardous waste to provide secure destruction of hazardous, non-hazardous and confidential materials.
I joined the business straight from sixth form, around 4 years ago, following a 6 week summer holiday placement at the site. Since then Veolia has sponsored me to complete a Bsc in Natural Sciences – Chemistry as part of my development programme.
I was nominated to represent the company as a STEM ambassador when I started and the company has been extremely supportive of the outreach work I have been involved in – they’ve given me a lot of recognition for it.
My main drive and passion for my volunteer work comes from attempting to bridge the gender gap in STEM industries, with particular focus on increasing the number of female representatives and the social mobility for young pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. I view my role as an ambassador and young scientist of vital importance to tackle society’s historical views of what it takes to be successful in STEM and I’d like to encourage the younger generation to reach their potential no matter who they are or where they come from.”
Could you be our next STAR STEM Ambassador?
