Nuffield Research Placements (North West)

All About STEM is delighted to be the Nuffield Coordinator for the North West, covering Cumbria, Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

Our role is to recruit and support businesses, academic institutions and other relevant stakeholders to host Y12 students to undertake a Nuffield Research Placement and to work with successful students applicants, and their teachers, to ensure the very best experience for all involved.

Nuffield Research Placements are funded by the Nuffield Foundation and delivered by STEM Learning. They are engaging, hands-on research projects, where students have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation. They are a fantastic opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned at school and work alongside researchers and industry professionals to:

– Develop subject understanding alongside research and quantitative skills to expand career prospects

– Learn more about higher education and different career paths

– Enhance UCAS personal statements and applications to university.

– Apply for a Gold CREST Award or the Big Bang Competition

Summer holidays after Year 12

How long?
4 – 6 weeks in total (2-3 weeks real-world research collaboration activities with the placement provider supervisor).

A well-supervised but independent research project relating to an area of science, quantitative social science, computing, technology, engineering or maths (or a combination!).

Placements can take place in a variety of locations including offices, museums, research centres, laboratories or fieldwork settings.

Students can take part in a placement at no cost. Travel costs are reimbursed and students may be eligible to receive a bursary each week.

Application Deadline?

The official deadline for applications in the North West region is 28th February 2022. However, several teachers have contacted us to say that the February half-term break was causing challenges for students in completing their applications/sourcing references.

We have therefore made the decision to extend the application window to 31st March 2022.

Applications must be submitted online by 31st March 2022
