The Science Leadership Benchmarks
March 06th 2024

The Science Leadership Benchmarks

The Science Leadership Benchmarks were developed by STEM Learning and were based on an independent review of research and evidence led by the Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence in Education (CUREE).

“Every young person deserves a great science education, empowering them to explore, question, and understand the natural world.” – STEM Learning

The seven benchmarks are a framework for good science leadership developed to support primary and secondary schools in providing pupils with the best possible science education.

The seven benchmarks are:

1. Leadership and vision for science

2. High quality science curriculum

3. Effective teaching and learning in science

4. Purposeful practical science

5. Addressing the needs of each pupil

6. Embedded careers and enrichment

7. Workforce development

The Science Leadership Benchmarks were developed in consultation with a range of stakeholders including the Department for Education, Ofsted, Primary Science Teaching Trust, Royal Society of Chemistry, Ogden Trust, Royal Society of Biology, Harris Federation, Teaching School Hubs Council and Eastern Colleges Group.
