MerseySTEM VEX Robot Challenge Days

Pupils from West Derby School have won the Liverpool heat of our robot challenge days, which was hosted brilliantly for us by University Academy of Liverpool.

The Employment and Skills Board of the Liverpool Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and MerseySTEM are running the Robot Challenge Days to promote engineering and technology among young people.

More than 50 schools are competing by building robots with the help of manufacturing employers in the region.

The robots then compete in a series of challenges and winners and runners-up from each heat will go forward to the final.

Sponsored by Speke-based Getrag Ford the fourth heat was won by West Derby School with a team from the Life Sciences UTC declared runner-up.

Getrag Ford HR manager Alan Seeley said: “By helping young people engage with technology we’re hoping to spark interest in subjects such as science, maths and engineering.”

Winner of the Knowsley heat was St Edmund Arrowsmith, winner of the Wirral heat was Wallasey School & winner of the Sefton heat was St Ambrose Barlow. The Halton & St Helens heats are yet to take place. Winners of each heat will go through to a grand final taking place as part of the International Festival for Business.
