NSEC – St Thomas Boteler ‘Chemistry with Cabbage’

On Monday 24th March, two of the MerseySTEM team visited St Thomas Boteler CE High School in Warrington at the invitation of Acting Head of Science, Rachel Fitzsimon.

Rachel had responded to a MerseySTEM teacher mailing offering support to local schools interested in entering their students into the National Science & Engineering Competition, the regional heats of which will take place at the North West Big Bang Fair at Aintree Racecourse on 8th July, 2014.

Liz & Ali ran an activity with a group of Y9 students to create indicator from red cabbage, illustrating how this could be developed into an NSEC project by exploring & explaining the practical uses of the experiment in, for example, clean water testing in rural Africa.

By the end of the session, several of the students were enthused & raring to get stuck into some project work, already having come up with some interesting & novel ideas, including uses for a custard powder flame-thrower!
