MerseySTEM Crewe Schools Robotics Challenge

Everyone was ready for a day of pulverized processors, ruptured relays, severed struts and mangled motors… it was time for MerseySTEM’s Crewe Schools Robotics Challenge – bring on the wars!

Host Sir William Stanier Community School welcomed 7 local schools, all hoping to take the title.

Our Ambassadors didn’t want to miss out on the fun so we had a ‘Guest Team’ made up of Ambassadors Marc Fletcher, David Knapp & Andy Bowyer – they called their team ‘Pointless’ as they weren’t allowed to count in the league – sorry! (It was a great effort though…)

From the two leagues created, Brine Leas took on Shavington High in the semi-finals while Sir William Stanier faced Sandbach.

Brine Leas and Sandbach School made the finals with Sandbach taking the victory, 11-10. Congratulations!

MerseySTEM Managing Director Michelle Dow said, “I love our Robot Challenges, it’s great that we don’t see our competitors faces for most of the morning as they are heads down, focused on building the best robot on the day. Questions come thick and fast: What do I do with this? How does this work? Can this be my own design? If you ask a 14 year old what advanced manufacturing or engineering is, usually the answer is ‘Er dunno – a mechanic?”

“The robot day gives us the opportunity to change perceptions, challenge stereotypes, promote teamwork and provide careers advice to students using real role-models from our city. Robot Wars are nothing new, but whatever you say – robots are cool!”

“A huge thank you  to Sir William Stanier staff, Warren Gilligan and Steve Collins,  for their excellent hospitality and of course, well done to all of our schools!”
