The Big Bang North West 2016: The Royal Society of Chemistry – Mission Starlight!

IT’S OFFICIAL! The Royal Society of Chemistry are bringing their GLOBAL EXPERIMENT to The Big Bang North West. You can take part in Mission Starlight – Book now!

Space can be dangerous for astronauts out on space walks. Without the Earth’s protective atmosphere they are in danger of being harmed by UV rays. Come investigate how chemistry can provide protection from starlight with Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 Global Experiment – Mission Starlight!  Plus you can make your own comet bath bomb and explore why things glow in our interactive tent!

“The Royal Society of Chemistry are excited to be back at the Big Bang North West and we are going to show you the strong links between chemistry and space! In December 2015, Tim Peake became the first British European Space Agency astronaut to visit the Space Station, as part of the Principia mission and has now collaborated with the Royal Society of Chemistry on our 2016 Global Experiment.

The first Briton in space was Helen Sharman who was a chemist before she was an astronaut. An understanding of chemistry is essential in the development of materials used for space travel as space can be dangerous for astronauts out on space walks. Without the Earth’s protective atmosphere they are in danger of being harmed by UV rays. The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 Global Experiment will show visitors how chemistry can provide protection from starlight!

We also plan to allow visitors to make their own comet bath bombs which they can take away with them and learn the difference between luminescence, chemiluminescence and phosphorescence using our small interactive tent which will contain glow in the dark stars, glow sticks and LEDs.”

STEM-sational! The Big Bang North West is going to be amazing, book now and don’t miss out…

Royal Society of Chemistry’s Education Coordinator’s for North West, Kat Presland and Charlotte Still, are being supported in the delivery of this by Royal Society of Chemistry’s Liverpool and Manchester & District local sections and members.

They are looking for keen RSC members who want to volunteer at this event.  Please get in touch with Kat at [email protected] for more details.
