STEM Teaching Professionals: STEM Insight Placements – Network Rail

STEM Learning have a selection of inspirational STEM Insight opportunities available for STEM teaching professionals and those with responsibility for careers.

Join Network Rail to discover more about the range of STEM-related careers that run and improve our railway track, bridges, viaducts and more.

5 day placements are available with Network Rail at their bases in Milton Keynes, Manchester, Birmingham, Swindon, Glasgow, York, Basingstoke, and at London Bridge and Stratford East London. Placements are available throughout the year (term time and holidays), supported by £1000 of ENTHUSE bursary funding.

The final part of the scheme is a one-day professional development experience held 4-6 months after your placement.

Going on a placement at Network Rail will help you to:

Inspire your students – see first-hand the careers available to students, through experiencing projects and meeting various STEM professionals, working in areas across the business. Understand about the future employment opportunities that the engineering industry can offer your students.

Build strong links with a local employer – connect with a local employer to develop staff and student experiences, with the aim of creating a longer term partnership. Help to boost your students’ confidence in making career choices and support the development of their employability skills. Find out more about the skills and competencies required for a career in a leading engineering and technology company, gain ideas for future collaboration (e.g. work experience, mentoring, speakers). Develop your own understanding on how real life engineering and technology can inspire your students to consider STEM careers and further study.

Enhance your advice on careers options– gain useful information about how to support students to make careers choices within STEM, taking into consideration future growth areas within STEM industries and both academic and vocational career routes.

Network Rail own and operate the railway infrastructure in England, Wales and Scotland on behalf of the nation
That’s 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and viaducts and thousands of tunnels, signals, level crossings and points. They also manage rail timetabling and 18 of the largest stations in England, Scotland and Wales.
