CREST Awards: Snack Science!
Did you know there’s a science to snacks?
Download two STEMsational CREST projects so your students can investigate crisps, experiment with their own fizzy drinks and discover more!
CREST Bronze Awards are typically completed by students aged 11+. They complete a ten-hour project which is a perfect introduction to STEM project work. Over the course of the project, teams of students design their own investigation, record their findings, and reflect on their learnings. This process gives students a taste of what it is like to be a scientist or engineer in the real-world.
Which crisps are the crispiest?
“For this project, you will carry out a number of experiments looking at the crispiness of crisps. To start with you will work out which crisps are the crispiest. Then you will investigate what factors can make crisps un-crisp and if there is a way of restoring the crispiness of soggy crisps.”
Make your own fizzy drink
“Commercial fizzy drinks are fizzy because carbon dioxide has been pumped through them. In this project, you will investigate how to make your own fizzy drink using carbon dioxide. You can compare your homemade fizzy drink to fizzy drinks you can buy in the shops.”

In addition, if you’d like to promote an environmentally friendly snack or lunchtime, you can try the ‘waste-free lunch‘ project.
And if you’re thinking of dental health after all of this munching, CREST even have a ‘make your own toothpaste‘ activity!
As North West Regional CREST Support Organisation, All About STEM promote CREST Awards across the region and point schools & clubs to the support they need to run this amazing scheme. CREST Awards encourage students to work like scientists, researchers, engineers and designers to investigate and explore their own project ideas.
