Maths: ‘Slicing Pizzas and Counting Necklaces’
Event Date: 12 May 2022 (In-person or via Zoom)
‘Slicing Pizzas and Counting Necklaces’ by Dr Joel Haddley (University of Liverpool)
Most of us divide a pizza using straight cuts that all meet in the middle, but it is also possible to cut a circular pizza into identical pieces such that at least one piece does not touch the centre.
Can you figure out how to do it yourself? In how many ways can you do it?
In this talk, Joel will present known results in this area, and take us into the world of (mathematical) necklaces.
Dr Joel Haddley is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the 2021-22 President of the Liverpool Mathematical Society. His own work on this question was featured in New Scientist and The Independent, amongst other publications.
Registration and further details via Eventbrite. Book one ticket per person to attend on the campus or one ticket per Zoom connection for the live stream.
