Big Bang North West: Meet the Volunteer – Gemma Hill-Davis
The Big Bang North West may be the largest, most STEM-sational event in our region, but the day wouldn’t be half as successful without our team of enthusiastic (and fantastic) volunteers who give up their time to support it.
Over the coming weeks we’ll be introducing you to some of these invaluable & inspirational stars, it wouldn’t be the same without them!
Meet the Volunteer – Gemma Hill-Davis
I work for SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy), within the Generation/Wholesale part of the business. Our main purpose is to generate, supply and distribute electricity via the National Grid. I am based at Fiddler’s Ferry Power Station, one of the few remaining fossil fuel power stations in the UK.
I am the Manager of Fiddler’s Ferry’s purpose built Education Centre and Nature Reserve. I have an amazing job and feel very lucky to work at such a fantastic site.
My job is incredibly diverse, I love being able to engage with the local community, plan events and impart knowledge about the engineering/science industry. The nature reserve is so peaceful and beautiful, kids love coming to the Education Centre and the best thing is that they learn about electricity generation and renewable energy.
Why you want to volunteer at BBNW: I think it is incredibly important to raise the profile of Science related careers with our young people, especially since we are expecting a skills gap in the near future. Ultimately I also think it will be a fun day!
What you’re looking forward to most about the event: Seeing young people engage, smile, learn about STEM with a smile on their face. I am also excited about the possibility of viewing some STEAM (science, tech, engineering, art and maths) related activities that I can steal…..urm borrow!
