The STFC Education Hub: STEM opportunities for remote or inner-city schools!

In 2015, Senior Public Engagement Officer Alan Brown of STFC Daresbury Laboratory set up The STFC Education Hub at the Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre (LGFC). The centre allows schools that are unable to visit Daresbury the opportunity for a fantastic experience. There are currently two slots available, get involved!

Based in the Ennerdale Valley in Cumbria the LGFC brings geographically remote schools and inner city schools to the field centre for two days. Geo-remote schools are selected due to their location, while inner city schools are selected to give them a scientific experience in a remote and exciting outdoor environment.

The LGFC currently offers Astronomy (activities, talks and observation sessions using our own telescopes), Sustainable Energy (the centre uses a hydroelectric system and a recently installed borehole for water supply) and Quaternary Geology of Ennerdale (what it tells us about climate change). They are in the process of adding Ecology and Archaeology to their portfolio.

Events are organised and run by a knowledgeable and enthusiastic team of volunteers, including leading authorities in their field up to professorial level, together with external experts.

The aim of events is to showcase the excitement of natural science and to inspire young people to become the scientists of tomorrow.
