The Big Bang @ Furness College

On October 17th and 18th 2017, Furness College hosted the Big Bang @ Furness facilitated by C-STEM Ltd and the Barrow Engineering Project. A two day celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths to help young people explore their future career options.

The event welcomed more than 1,000 primary, secondary and further education students to Furness College’s Channelside campus. Attendees enjoyed a series of interactive experiments ranging from virtual reality to nuclear energy.

Representatives from businesses and STEM ambassadors from across Furness and South Cumbria discussed their work and demonstrated technologies they use.

Tony Gill, of C-STEM, said: “The Big Bang Fair has become a key STEM event in the calendar and people in education and business look forward to this each year. It’s great to be able to hold the event at Furness College, which has amazing facilities and a great reputation for training in STEM subjects. This is part of a programme of STEM activities in Furness designed to enthuse and excite young people about the potential of STEM careers in the future.”

Principal and Chief Executive of Furness College Andrew Wren said “the event is a great opportunity to bring together talented students and their potential future employers”.

Furness College also provided a sensational science show for all attendees at the end of each day!

Furness College staff demonstrated a virtual welder and students visited exhibitor stands to discover pedal power, chemicals reactions, meet an interactive robot and more!

Judging for Gold CREST Awards took place during the event. Pupils from Ulverston Victoria High School (working with Siemens) were commended for their amazing projects! The judging panel included experts from OneSubsea, BAE systems, BDAE (Barrow and District Association of Engineers).

Mike Jeschke & John Rogers chair the STEM council for Siemens Subsea. Mike Jeschke won STEM Learning’s Outstanding STEM Ambassador of the Year award 2017!
