Big Bang North West: Big Bang @ Daresbury Laboratory!

On the 7th of December, the Big Bang North West facilitated Big Bang @ Daresbury Laboratory in partnership with Shaping Futures. 16 schools from across the region enjoyed everything from aquaponics to flaming whoosh bottles and more… not forgetting a careers fair including robots, brains and live animals!

Over the coming year the Big Bang North West will be bringing you a series of free to attend ‘Big Bang @’ events. These half day sessions consist of hands-on workshops, science shows & a careers market place, all taking place at a variety of venues across the region. The first of which was Big Bang @ Daresbury Labs.

Attendees took part in interactive workshops & shows:

Science & Technology Facilities CouncilWhat the eyes cannot see…

Examining technologies used in nature, medicine, science & lifesaving.
Infra-red, thermal imaging and more. Who had the coldest nose?

Farm Urban – Build a produce pod

The produce pod is an open source aquaponics system that allows you to grow fresh, healthy food all year round. Aquaponics is a mini-ecosystem inspired by nature: your fish fertilise your plants and your plants purify the water for your fish.

Science 2 u – I wasn’t expecting that!

Fire, sparks and eruptions with colour changing chemistry and flash-bang fun – a science spectacular!

The careers market place was packed with Universities from the region offering information & informal advice & guidance… along with lots of freebies! Students had the opportunity to try robotics, take psychology tests, care for live animals, test medical equipment and more.

Big Bang @ School

The Big Bang @ School supports schools to deliver an event to excite pupils about STEM subjects and inspire them to consider science or engineering careers.

A Big Bang @ School Fair can be big or small, you can invite local businesses to take part, involve STEM ambassadors, bring in activity providers or do it all by yourself. The important thing is that pupils have fun finding out where their STEM studies can lead them.

The Big Bang @ School is part of the wider Big Bang programme, led by EngineeringUK in partnership with over 200 organisations.

You can find out more here or if you live in the North West contact [email protected] or call 01519094812 to express your interest.

Shaping Futures, (also known as the Merseyside Collaborative Outreach Programme) is a new outreach programme for the Liverpool City Region formed by 12 local Higher Education (HE) providers and led by the University of Liverpool.
