Engineering Your Future Chester: Inspiration & Careers!

On Wednesday the 4th of December 2019, All About STEM facilitated Engineering Your Future Chester at the University of Chester, Thornton Science Park. A phenomenal, interactive careers event for aspiring engineers!

Now in its nineteenth year in London and its thirteenth year in the North West, Engineering Your Future has become a key date in the diary of North West Secondary Schools and Sixth Form Colleges. This series of one day career events has been established to provide an opportunity for attendees to see that engineering is a career worth pursuing and help them make an informed choice.

Engineering Your Future is jointly coordinated and sponsored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineersthe Institution of Civil Engineersthe Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institution of Chemical EngineersThe Nuclear Institute and the British Computer Society.

The event was split into 5 workshop sessions providing insights into areas including Mechanical, Civil, Electrical/Electronic, Chemical & Nuclear Engineering; workshops were provided by Tata Steel, Campbell Reith Hill, Smiths Medical, Integral Pharma Services and the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

Thanks to these inspirational companies and organisations, students had the chance to become an engineer for a day. In their role they considered real-life problems, designed solutions and built/ tested structures – there were plenty of games and challenges too!

Tata Steel – Groups discovered the different types of engineering & routes into them followed by an essential life-skill session – wiring a plug!

Campbell Reith Hill – Longest roll wins! A challenge using friction, structure, angles & forces, who would build the best ball run?

Smiths Medical – Students showcased their product ideas to aid recovery and discussed how engineering supports health.

Integral Pharma Services – Learners discovered more about engineering in pharmaceuticals, food processing and specialist laboratories and worked on improving the dispersion of materials through a hopper.

Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers – Emergency! Attendees looked at electrical and mechanical careers and used bridge building kits to create solutions to real-life problems.

Every session was practical and interactive and students were encouraged to investigate and experiment.

Along with professional representatives from each workshop, a team of expert STEM Ambassadors were on hand throughout the day to support each session.

There was also an opportunity to attend a market place offering further information on ‘routes into engineering’. Businesses and educational organisations exhibited throughout the conference hall with exciting activities and information on courses, apprenticeships and careers.

All About STEM Managing Director, Michelle Dow said “What a fantastic event, a huge thank you to everyone involved and all of our schools! Our Engineering Your Future events are always popular as both students and teachers can benefit together as they increase their awareness of the broad scope offered by a career in engineering, the various routes into engineering, what they can expect and what it entails.

They are inspired by our qualified and experienced engineers, STEM ambassadors and technicians who present and exhibit on the day and can find out more about pathways, apprenticeships and qualifications at the careers marketplace.

It’s also a lot of fun, it’s not every day you can be a real engineer, take apart equipment or experiment with bots. Engineering is exciting and so is the future and these young people can be a part of that!”
