Big Bang North West: Big Bang Barrow – Booms, Buzzes and Bots!
“An absolutely amazing two-days at Big Bang Barrow!”
More than 1,200 primary, secondary and further education students attended the South Cumbria Big Bang Science and Engineering Fair hosted by Furness College on the 18th and 19th of October 2016.
The two day event offered young people the chance to experience Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths via fun, hands-on exhibits. Children could identify bones from X-ray, work with 3D printers, watch explosive science, take part in elephant toothpaste experiments, control robots and so much more!
STEM Cumbria brought the event to Furness College and the reception from local students was overwhelming. Along with STEM Cumbria, sponsors for the event were Big Bang North West, Centrica Energy, Barrow Engineering Project and BAE Systems.
Regional Big Bang Fairs combine exciting shows, interactive workshops and exhibits, as well careers information from STEM professionals. The aim is to show young people (primarily aged 7-19) the exciting and rewarding opportunities available to them and demonstrate that STEM can be fun!
STEM Ambassadors were on hand to inspire the children alongside the exhibitors, explaining about STEM careers and the amazing opportunities available in the field.
All About STEM Managing Director, Michelle Dow said: “As the team behind The Big Bang North West, our mission is to facilitate events across the region that inspire STEM and engage students and that is what Big Bang Fairs are all about! We are so proud to support this event and see so many young people revelling in these subjects. The smiles say it all, STEM is so much fun!”
Tony Gill, director of STEM Cumbria said: “From the engagement of the students and the companies, it has been a tremendous success again. The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the companies are very pleased with the way they have engaged with them. It’s inspirational to see how these young people are engaging in STEM activities. There has been a real buzz.”
Schools attending included Walney School, Greegate Junior School, Ormsgill Primary, Sir John Barrow, Victoria Academy, Yarlsidee Academy, Dane Ghyll and St Columba’s Catholic Primary School.
Congratulations to STEM Cumbria Ltd and the Big Bang Barrow on a STEM-sational event! A huge thank you to everyone involved and all attending schools. All About STEM’s motto is to ‘make it happen’ and you certainly did!
